Greedy Government
Greed
seems to be widespread through society. Consumers grapple for more
money and materials. Corporations use unethical and sometimes illegal
methods to make more profit. But some governments are also becoming too
aggressive and using not-so-nice ways to extract more money from their
citizens. But they are supposed to be there for the people, aren’t they?
It's
hard to fathom but governments will sometimes market undesirable or
harmful products to their own citizens for additional revenue. They
will gouge the public in undesirable ways: public space advertising,
junk food sales in schools, parking fees where there is not a parking
problem, and gambling.
Those
politicians that promote gambling as fun and a quick way to get rich
are treating their tax payers meanly. It is not fun when you have lost
your money and were there because you were persuaded to come to have
fun and win.
It
seems terribly wrong to promote the dreams that can come true, at
extreme odds. For some of the poor and gambling addicts, their gamble
is a last chance to make everything all right.
The
government efforts to help: "Call this help line if you have a gambling
problem" is not justification for having already taken the money and
harmed or destroyed lives. Those politicians should show some
conscience and explain the odds and details - not the fantasy of
winning!
According
to the Canada Safety Council there are likely more than 200 gambling
related suicides per year in Canada.
Lotteries
are a tax on the stupid, they say. Are they not a tax by the stupid?
